Scrubby Rise is a significant part of the Wirra Wirra estate vineyards. Originally bushland, it's now anything but scrubby, it does however continue to produce wines which rise to every occasion. Formerly known as Sexton's Acre, this Chardonnay has always been a defacto member of the Scrubby Rise range. Refreshingly unoaked, it's for all those who like their wine to reflect the vineyard, not the trees, just a celebration of natural Chardonnay fruit character.

Daniel James Wilson would write DJW rules on school book covers, desks, garden edgings and wet concrete whenever the opportunity arose. In 1997 DJW established a small 5½ acre plot of Riesling in the highest and most fertile corner of the family property. From inaugural vintage it became apparent that the fruit from DJW block was quite different. The hand picked harvest from this supreme site was kept separate and DJW Riesling went on to claim a string of prestigious trophies.

Tim Adams knows about Clare Valley Semillon. He began his career as a cellarhand for the Stanley Wine Company, rising to the position of chief winemaker, he also worked under the tutelage of Mick Knappstein. Adams objective with Clare Valley Semillon is to retain its freshness and authenticity, for an aromatic wine of exquisite balance and generosity of flavour. Ferments in French oak infuse complexity into the grass and stonefruit character of Semillon.

Tim Adams can rely on harvests from Valley Clare's bravest vineyards to source the finest parcels of Pinot Gris. Rather than removing the distinctive grey tint of the grape's skin, Tim Adams chooses to retain this charming feature of Pinot Gris in the finished wine. Vinified from the complete pressings of fruit, the totality of which have made a remarkable contribution to a soundly structured Pinot Gris, the pinkish bronze hue sets the stage for an alluring nose, followed by a rich, robust palate and long, memorable finish.

Fully organic fruit, coddled clones of the unique Grenache Blanc, all hand picked and whole bunch pressed for a wild indigenous yeast vinification in a mix of seasoned French oak barrels and traditional concrete fermenters. Batches are rested on sediments for several months, building texture and infusing complexity. Grenache Blanc is distinctive for its full flavoured palate, its bright, tangy citrus fruits are drizzled with honeysuckle and lemon balm. In South Australia, the best sites for growing wine grapes were originally sold off in eighty acre lots. Bill Taylor planted his first eighty acres of vine to some of the best Terra rossa soils within the Clare Valley circa 1969, naming his original block the Eighty Acres.

We blame the booze. The whiff and the swill did us in and all that was left to do was to make more. In many ways the wines that weren’t worth the pull on the cork caused this as much as the wines that we will never have the pleasure of decorking again. Skillogalee is Celtic for a sort of gruel commonly fed to prisoners. When John Horrocks finally made it back to Penwortham after his trek through the Flinders ranges on Afghan camels, he gave the creek nearby the name Skillogalee in memory of the scant provisions which sustained the expedition. Skillogalee makes wine in a small but modern facility, which crushes only around 250 tonnes each vintage, affording the team a unique opportunity to hand make discrete quantities of individually carefully crafted, small batch vintages.

Skillogalee is blessed every year with harvests of the Clare Valley's finest Traminer, a bounty of the most outstanding quality fruit, which the dedicated team handcrafts into vintages of exquisite small batch wines. Skillogalee means classically structured Gewurztraminer, solidly built, aromatic and spicey with notes of hazel and honeysuckle, balanced between drying minerality and floral fruits. St Francis Xavier is really made in the vineyard. Fruit is sourced from a prized parcel at Sevenhill that captures the very essence of Clare Valley Riesling. St Francis Xavier is grown and made with great devotion to the preservation of flavours nurtured in the vineyard. The highly regarded clone from Geisheim is planted to a protected site, a block referred to as Herr Weikert. Great care is taken to settle and bottle the wine quickly, ensuring the vineyard's signature flavours are captured. It's the aim each year to release St Francis Xavier after twelve months in bottle, just as the glorious fruit characters begin to emerge.

Sevenhill are a quiet achiever, softly spoken artificers of Clare Valley's finest. Riesling develops so much charm as it grows in the vineyard, that if it's picked at the right time, the wine is virtually made. Riesling's desire to wear her heart on her sleeve still means that she can be sensitive, so the vinification must be compassionate. Amongst the propitious terroirs of Sevenhill, vines yield fruit of refined minerality and savoury edge, the richer, red soils are higher in nutrients, all the team have to do is protect and maintain the character of fruit.

The pick of Watervale fruit from a very special, hand selected site amongst the idyllic, rolling pastorals of Valley Clare. An intensely fragrant blend of freshly squeezed tahitian lime and blossom frangiapan over a subtle hint of wet stones, youthful and bright, fresh lime intense on the palate. A term of extended lees contact and four months stirring battonage introduces complexity, textural richness, crisp and dry, a beautiful line of grapefruit acidity to the finish.

Valley Clare is renowned for the gentle nature and refinement of its Riesling, generous yet elegant, what differentiates it from other regions are the dry, hot summer days and cool, crisp nights which contribute to the intensity of flavour. Hand crafted from grapes grown to the elevated terroirs on Smyth and St Clare vineyards, picked off dry grown vines planted to rich red loam overlays deep limestone, a winsome Riesling style of lifted florals heralding an enriched palate of citrus, honey and lime followed by crisp granny apple acid on the finish.

A frivolously labelled Sauvignon Blanc by an otherwise serious winery, Barking Mad has already created quite a name and following for itself.
